Welcome to the Yellow Rose Chapter of the EGA
We are the Yellow Rose Chapter of the Embroiderers' Guild of America (EGA). We welcome anyone who is interested in learning more about embroidery in its many forms. We welcome guests at our meetings, so there is no pressure to join just to attend a meeting and see what goes on. Besides our meetings, there are other opportunities to stretch your skills. Correspondence courses are sponsored by our Region (Chapters in TX-LA-OK-AR-MS) as well as at the National level. There is also a National Seminar (a week in the fall) and our Region has a Seminar, usually in June for three to four days. We also have numerous Community Outreach activities. Materials for working on Community Outreach projects are supplied by our Chapter -- we only ask for your time and energy. In short, you can do as much or as little as your time permits though Yellow Rose.
Our chapter is absolutely not for "advanced-only" stitchers. Because there is an active ANG chapter in Houston, we tend to do anything-but-needlepoint so that there is a variety available to the many stitchers who belong to both ANG and EGA in Houston. In 2006 we did a lovely pulled work piece, a bargello heart including how-to-finish it, and lots of other small programs. We have stitchers who are very inexperienced, and certainly many who may know one form of embroidery well, but not many others and want to stretch themselves by taking on new challenges.
In addition to chapter programs, there are other opportunities to sample and study many types of embroidery. For example, currently there are at least two Crewel work courses currently offered as group correspondence courses. National makes them known via the National website, as well as their(our) magazine, NeedleArts, which is published four times a year and is included in your membership, and an Educational Catalog, which is updated yearly.
Our VP Programs, Andrea Standefer, has great programs lined up for this year, which you can read about in the newsletter. In August 2007, we will be having Catherine Jordan here for a Saturday/Sunday 2-day workshop on dyeing your own threads/linen to make a Texas Sampler. (In October 2006 we had Carole Lake teach a 2-day needlepoint workshop and Carole will be returning to teach a companion piece in early 2008.) We have a strong core group of stitchers who study Japanese Embroidery twice yearly. Our current Workshop chair is a certified JE teacher. We have all levels involved in this.
As of April 2007, we have 79 members, with attendance at the monthly meetings being around 25-30. Yearly membership is $53. (This includes membership/newsmagazine from the National organization.
